Play Purpy's Shapes on an Interactive White Board or a computer attached to a projector to reinforce concept of finding shapes in objects.
Go on a Shape Hunt and have students photograph shapes they find around the classroom or on the school grounds.
Don't have a class set of cameras? Use camera cutouts of diecuts and pretend to take pictures which the students will draw when they get back from the hunt. Or, have students take turns with a real camera while others use a diecut camera to spot the picture they want to take when it's their turn with the real camera.
If students took pictures with pretend cameras, have them use a drawing program to draw a picture of the shapes they found.
Upload the pictures (either taken on a real camera or drawn) to a VoiceThread and have each student use the drawing tools in VoiceThread to talk about and circle the shapes that they found on the Shape Hunt.
Extensions:
Teacher will take pictures which contain multiple shapes and add these to the VoiceThread created above. Students will circle and identify the shapes that they see in the pictures.
Students will create a shapes PowerPoint Presentation using the drawing tools in PowerPoint.
Students will learn about artists who used geometric shapes in their work such as: Piet Mondrian,Vasily Kandinsky, Joan Miro or Paul Klee and will create artwork in the style of one or more of these artists. This could be a technology project using drawing programs or could be an actual art project using paints.
